Wednesday afternoon, July 27th, Alan Bean, an inventory
specialist in the returns department of Country Home Products, a lawn equipment manufacturer
based in Vergennes, Vermont, was opening boxes as part of his daily routine, only this
equipment had moving parts----five, exhausted and dehydrated 3-week old kittens.
The package originated in South Carolina where the shipper had no idea about the precious
cargo.
After his initial surprise, he teamed up with his colleague, Deb Peters, quickly tracking
down some kitten formula---an action that saved their lives. The kittens were then brought
to the Addison County Humane Society in nearby Middlebury Vermont where staff placed them
with a lactating 'mama' cat named Hazel. Hazel has adopted these kittens as her own and
they are now safe and recovering well.

Jill Tucker, the Executive Director, sighs with relief; "we are so happy and amazed that
these kittens survived at least 2 tough days in record breaking heat without their mother.
Our hats are off to the wonderful people at Country Home Products for extending such kindness
to these animals and acting so quickly on their behalf. With so many animals in need, it's
reassuring to know how wonderful and compassionate people can be. This is another reminder
for all of us that an act of kindness can make a huge difference in the life of an animal."
The kittens are healthy and expected to recover quickly with the help of their adoptive mother
Hazel. Once they are old enough, both kittens and mother will be eligible for adoption through
the Addison County Humane Society.
